On January 23, 2025, Portugal held its first electronic auction for the centralized purchase of biomethane and green hydrogen, organized by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG).
This auction aimed to acquire renewable gases for injection into the public gas grid, contributing to the diversification of energy sources and the promotion of sustainable alternatives.
Eight companies were selected as winners of the auction, with Dourogás standing out as the only bidder for biomethane supply. The remaining companies focused on supplying green hydrogen, highlighting the growing interest and investment in this emerging energy sector.
This auction represents a significant milestone in Portugal's national energy transition strategy, encouraging the production and integration of renewable gases into the country's energy system.
The initiative aims not only to reduce dependence on fossil fuels but also to position Portugal at the forefront of clean energy, aligning with European carbon neutrality goals.
